About The Position

Under general supervision, the Permit Specialist provides backup support to the Permit Technician and assists the Development Director with planning and development related activities to include reviewing plans and permit applications and providing planning and development information to applicants. Requirements

  • Ability to understand the Town of Northlake development processes and submittal requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of permitting and development review.
  • Knowledge of municipal government organization and functions and Town operations.
  • Good knowledge of the rules of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Advanced knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  • Exercises sound, independent judgment with general policy guidelines.
  • Interacts professionally with the public and public officials.
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Remains organized and prioritize work.
  • Uses time effectively to accomplish tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Development Director with scheduling of development applications for appropriate meetings of the Town Council, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and any other meetings that may be required.
  • Maintain software applications and data relevant to the permitting and development review process.
  • Institute and maintain departmental files related to the development review process including but not limited to zoning ordinances, plats, site plans, construction documents, building code review and plans, and certificates of occupancy.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding zoning and development regulations such as setbacks, permitted uses, lot size, parking standards, etc.
  • Assist with the preparation and mailing of notifications to impacted properties for zoning cases and coordinate with the official newspaper to advertise zoning cases per State statutes.
  • Review plans submitted with various permit applications including permits for residential and commercial buildings, swimming pools, fences, and signs for compliance with zoning, development, and environmental health regulations. This position is not expected to review plans for building code compliance.
  • Manage the health permit and inspection program for food establishments and public pools.
  • Compose plan review memos and documents inspection results.
  • Maintain permit logs, files and records management programs; maintain records and plan review files and prepare periodic reports as required.
  • Assist Building Official and Building Inspectors; provide administrative support services as needed; research issues and provide data on permit and plan issues and related subjects.
  • Assist and support duties of the Permit Technician and serve as back up to position.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
