About The Position

Performs a variety of routine and complex technical work in the current and/or long-range planning of the Village, economic development, and the development and implementation of land use and related zoning regulations including building permit review, development review. This position also oversees the Operations Division, including customer service, records management and policy development. This position will also: Supervise clerical staff. Provide information on land use and zoning applications, ordinances, codes, plans and related planning programs, services or regulations to architects, engineers, developers, contractors, owners, community groups and interested persons. Serve as the primary liaison to the Planning and Zoning Commission by attending meetings and presenting materials to the commission for recommendation to the Village Board. Assist in coordinating and completing the 2026 Imagine Together Comprehensive Plan with the Village’s consultants. Guide implementation of the Comprehensive Plan post adoption to ensure goals and visions are being met in terms of long-term development. Lead and develop economic development initiatives to further business retention and recruitment in the Village. This includes reporting milestones to leadership, Tax Increment Financing maintenance, soliciting for business opportunities, and utilizing existing data management programs to attract new business. Become proficient in new permitting software being implemented in the department to assist all team members on its use and increase efficiency for the department as a whole. Assist in communicating official plans, programs, policies, and procedures to staff and the general public. Review applications for annexation, zoning, subdivision and land development for conformity with the principles of good planning and compliance with local ordinances. Evaluate zoning and building permit applications for compliance with applicable local codes and ordinances including but not limited to zoning regulations, landscape requirements and lighting regulations. Serve as the liaison to the Chamber of Commerce by attending their meetings as a representative of the Village and providing updates on current events and activities of the Village.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in land use planning, urban planning, administration or related field
  • Three to five (3-5) years experience in municipal planning and zoning
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience, additional experience substituting on a year for year basis for the required education.
  • Employees are required to have their permanent residency within a 15-mile radius of the Village, unless an exception is approved by the Village Administrator.
