About The Position

Thornton is the 6th largest city in Colorado, with a diverse population of over 153,000 people and projected growth of 90,000 in the next 30 years. The city is transitioning from primarily residential development to a destination for primary employers and regional retail. The Director of Planning and Economic Development will lead, direct, and manage planning, development review, and business support activities to foster sustainable growth with strong community engagement. This role provides strategic leadership to connect long-range planning with purposeful development for a vibrant community and implements the approved strategic workplan to address city priorities through thoughtful leadership and policies. The department will consolidate Planning and Development Services with the Office of Economic Development. The Director will collaborate with other departments to enhance resident and developer engagement across all city programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Eight years’ management level experience in community development or related field
  • Five years of supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated strong familiarity with the Council-Manager form of government
  • Proven record of leadership, fiscal stewardship, innovation, and relationship-building
