About The Position

The City of Thornton is seeking a Director of Parks and Recreation to lead, direct, and manage its parks and recreation facilities and programming. This role is responsible for enhancing the community and improving the quality of life through visionary leadership, robust stakeholder engagement, and coordination with planning and development to achieve desired community outcomes. The Director will implement the approved strategic workplan, address city priorities through thoughtful leadership and policies, and develop intergovernmental strategies and partnerships. This position also involves representing the city and maintaining strong relationships with regional partners such as Adams County, school districts, athletic associations, State Agencies, Homeowners Associations, Metro Districts, and other Special Districts like the Mile High Flood District and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. The Director and their teams will collaborate with other departments to strengthen the City’s capacity for meaningful resident engagement across all City programs, including forming partnerships with neighborhoods, residents, and community groups to enhance the social fabric and physical aspects of Thornton neighborhoods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Eight years’ management experience in parks, recreation or related field
  • Five years of supervisory experience
  • Successfully served in or demonstrate strong familiarity with the Council-Manager form of government
  • Proven record of leadership, fiscal stewardship, innovation, and relationship-building
