About The Position

Wendel is a nationally recognized innovative, full-service design firm that collaborates with private and public entities to holistically approach projects. Our clients benefit from our full-service capability that allows us to tackle technically complex projects from early planning through implementation, with our own in-house experts. With multiple regional offices, Wendel presents the opportunity to work on an exciting variety of projects with a collaborative team approach. The firm is seeking a full-time Planner III to join their winning team in Buffalo, Williamsville or Rochester, NY offices. As a Planner III, you will lead and help manage projects within the municipal/land use/renewable energy planning team, perform independent project assignments, attend meetings (daytime and evening), develop various local and regional planning documents, comprehensive plans, local waterfront revitalization programs (LWRPs) and a variety of other planning assignments. Other work may include providing professional planning support to client communities and municipal boards on diverse land use and zoning matters. Planners are expected to be able to organize and lead meetings with advisory boards, committees, community stakeholders, and elected officials. This is a long-term growth position within the Planning Team and the company, offering opportunities to work with many disciplines and diverse business groups within Wendel.

Requirements

  • Must have a Planning degree
  • 6 to 14 years of experience in Land Use Planning, environmental, and general municipal planning consultation
  • Experience with SEQRA (State Environmental Quality Review Act) processes is required
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to create strong relationships
  • Excellent communication, presenting, and writing skills
  • Must be willing to attend a substantial amount of night meetings
  • Must be willing to travel regionally
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office applications, and GIS capabilities
  • Skilled in facilitating meetings—both in-person and virtual—and engaging in public participation activities
  • Strong time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines

  • AICP Certification

  • Experience in renewable energy permitting, sustainability planning, and NEPA

Responsibilities

  • Perform independent project assignments

  • Develop various local and regional planning documents, comprehensive plans, local waterfront revitalization programs (LWRPs) and a variety of other planning assignments
  • Provide professional planning support to client communities and municipal boards on diverse land use and zoning matters
  • Organize and lead meetings with advisory boards, committees, community stakeholders, and elected officials
  • May supervise the Planning Intern, Junior Planner (Planner I) or Associate Planner (Planner II), depending on the structure of the Planning Team
