About The Position

McGill University's Department of Physics is hiring Physics Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the Fall 2026 term. This role involves supporting undergraduate physics courses, which range from introductory mechanics and waves to advanced topics in quantum theory and astrophysics. TAs will be responsible for various duties depending on the specific course, including grading assignments and exams, facilitating tutorials and lab sessions, invigilating exams, and holding office hours to assist students. Priority will be given to graduate students enrolled in a physics program at McGill University, in accordance with the collective agreement. Requirements

  • Must be registered in a graduate program at McGill University
  • Priority will be given to students enrolled in a graduate program in Physics
  • Prior graduate/undergraduate study in the subject of the course
  • Suitable teaching skills
  • Completion of coursework in electronics, or equivalent experience (for PHYS 328)
  • Advanced knowledge of quantum theory at the level of Sakurai (for PHYS 551)
  • Knowledge of graduate level course on Quantum Field Theory (for PHYS 610)

Nice To Haves

  • Ideally, the TA will have taken PHYS 434 at McGill (for PHYS 434)
  • Ideally, the TA will have taken an atmospheric/climate physics course themselves, or have TA’ed for this course before (for PHYS 404)
  • Alternatively, a graduate student with research involving planetary atmospheres would be ideal (stellar atmospheres would be a close second) (for PHYS 404)

Responsibilities

  • Grading assignments, quizzes, and exams
  • Invigilation of exams
  • Lab facilitation and supervision
  • Tutorial facilitation
  • Holding office hours for student consultation
  • Facilitating problem-solving sessions
  • Moderating online discussions (myCourses)
  • Answering student emails and questions
  • Updating course materials
  • Organizing scheduling
  • Delivering guest lectures (optional/conditional)
  • Providing TA sessions on assignments
  • Providing replacement lectures if the instructor is travelling
