About The Position

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Gastroenterologist to join our growing team in Southern Maryland. This is an outstanding opportunity to practice comprehensive gastroenterology in a collaborative, patient-centered environment supported by an integrated academic health system. The Gastroenterologist will provide high-quality, evidence-based care to patients in both the outpatient clinic and hospital settings. Responsibilities include evaluating, diagnosing, and treating a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions while collaborating with primary care providers, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school or foreign equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine Residency.
  • Completion of an accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship.
  • Current or eligible unrestricted medical license in the State of Maryland.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Gastroenterology.
  • Current DEA and CDS registration (or eligibility to obtain prior to employment).
  • Eligible for and able to maintain clinical privileges at one or more UMMS-affiliated acute care hospitals.
  • Demonstrated compliance with continuing medical education (CME) requirements necessary to maintain licensure and board certification.
  • Current BLS certification (or obtained upon hire, if required).
  • Experienced gastroenterologists and graduating fellows are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated qualifications and clinical experience necessary to independently perform the responsibilities of a practicing gastroenterologist.
  • Expertise in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
  • Excellent clinical judgment and sound decision-making skills.
  • Commitment to evidence-based medicine and delivering high-quality patient care.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and hospital leadership.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage a busy clinical practice.
  • Excellent documentation skills utilizing electronic medical records.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in building a comprehensive gastroenterology practice within a growing community is preferred.
  • Experience with advanced endoscopic procedures is welcomed but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive gastroenterology care in both the outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital settings.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with acute and chronic gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including upper endoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy, with advanced endoscopic procedures as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans using evidence-based clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in inpatient consultations, hospital rounds, and shared call responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with primary care physicians, surgeons, oncologists, hospitalists, radiologists, pathologists, and other specialists to coordinate patient care.
  • Accurately document patient encounters, procedures, and treatment plans within the electronic medical record.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, preventive care, medications, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical performance programs, and patient safety activities.
  • Support the mission, vision, and values of the University of Maryland Medical System while promoting outstanding patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
  • Work collaboratively with leadership to improve operational efficiency, patient access, and practice growth.
  • Participate in disease management and population health initiatives designed to improve quality outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
  • Delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.
  • Identifying and addressing potential patient safety concerns.
  • Reporting adverse events and near misses in accordance with organizational policy.
  • Participating in quality improvement and clinical performance initiatives.
