About The Position

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), a member of Dartmouth Health (DH), is seeking an inaugural Family Medicine Residency Program Director. This role will lead the establishment of the first family medicine residency program administered by DH, located at SVMC in Bennington, Vermont. The program is slated to begin in 2029 with 6 residents, offering training primarily at SVMC with rotations at DH. SVMC is well-equipped for rural family medicine training, featuring a busy emergency department, active labor and delivery, and an upcoming adolescent behavioral health unit. The health system supports four mixed adult/pediatric primary care clinics, one adult care clinic, and one pediatric care clinic, employing over 30 primary care providers serving approximately 31,000 patients. These clinics are enhanced by the Vermont Blueprint for Health, providing behavioral health and case management. SVMC aims to expand primary care through APP training and retention, increased virtual support, and telemedicine services, in addition to the residency program. The patient population is predominantly geriatric, with providers addressing diverse socioeconomic disparities and life experiences. SVMC boasts a 100-year history of healthcare innovation, including a 99-bed hospital and numerous practices. It has achieved Magnet Center for Nursing Excellence designation for six consecutive cycles, a testament to its commitment to nursing excellence. Requirements

  • At least five (5) years of clinical practice experience
  • At least three (3) years of family medicine residency experience as a Program Director, Assistant Program Director, or core faculty member
  • Advanced clinical degree (MD or DO)
  • Current or Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Vermont
  • Board Certified in Family Medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine
  • Strong understanding of ACGME's program requirements
  • Passion for GME

Responsibilities

  • Full-Time position with 50% dedicated time to program development and 50% to clinical service
  • Lead the ACGME application process
  • Hire core faculty
  • Support the construction of the new clinic site
  • Partner with DH GME leadership to secure offsite rotations
  • Develop, implement, and maintain curriculum for educating residents in family medicine
  • Define, supervise, and evaluate all aspects of the program, including faculty, facilities, and educational resources
  • Develop tools, feedback mechanisms, evaluations, and action plans for faculty and residents
