About The Position

Inaugural Program Director – Emergency Medicine Residency Meritus Health | Hagerstown, Maryland Meritus Health is seeking an accomplished and visionary physician leader to serve as the Inaugural Program Director for a new Emergency Medicine Residency Program. This is a unique opportunity to design, build, and lead a residency program within a rapidly expanding academic health system and a newly established osteopathic medical school. Meritus Health is evolving into a regional academic medical center with a growing portfolio of ACGME-accredited residency programs and the Meritus School of Osteopathic Medicine. As part of this continued expansion, the development of an Emergency Medicine residency represents a key addition to an actively growing graduate medical education enterprise, aligned with the health system’s mission to meet community and regional workforce needs. The inaugural Program Director will play a central leadership role in shaping the program’s vision, curriculum, and culture while contributing to the broader academic mission of the institution. Meritus Health provides care for a large and diverse patient population across Western Maryland and the surrounding tri-state region. Requirements

  • MD or DO degree with eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Maryland
  • Current board certification in Emergency Medicine by ABEM or AOBEM
  • Minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience in graduate medical education
  • Demonstrated specialty expertise in Emergency Medicine
  • Proven ability to lead teams, build consensus, and develop educational programs
  • Commitment to resident education, mentorship, and professional development

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a Program Director, Associate Program Director, or core faculty strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of ACGME accreditation standards and residency program operations

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, ACGME accreditation, and implementation of a new Emergency Medicine Residency Program
  • Build a program grounded in clinical excellence, innovation, and community-focused care
  • Align training with a busy, high-acuity emergency department and growing trauma program
  • Serve as a key leader within the Graduate Medical Education enterprise
  • Design and submit the ACGME accreditation application for initial program approval
  • Develop curriculum, evaluation systems, and clinical training experiences aligned with ACGME requirements
  • Recruit and mentor faculty, residents, and program leadership team members
  • Foster an educational environment that supports all ACGME competency domains
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and ACGME policies and standards
  • Collaborate across specialties, particularly with trauma, critical care, and surgical services
  • Promote scholarly activity, quality improvement, and innovation in emergency care delivery
