About The Position

This is a temporary/locums position for a Critical Care / Pulmonology Physician to cover a 2-3 week placement while a provider is on vacation. The role involves serving as the attending physician for inpatient and outpatient services, performing comprehensive patient assessments, ordering diagnostic studies, and supervising housestaff and midlevel providers. Duties also include performing various specialty-specific procedures and providing consultative services across multiple patient care areas within the facility. The physician will be responsible for comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up, and clinic intervention in primary care settings, including making physician-to-physician contact calls for referrals and arranging for patient transfers to tertiary care centers. All documentation, test requests, consultative requests, and medication orders must be entered into the computerized patient record system (CPRS) on the day of the visit, with provisions for system failures. Documentation must meet medical center policies, Clinical Practice Guidelines, and Joint Commission/HCFA standards. A strong working knowledge of computers and the CPRS system is required, though orientation will be provided.

Requirements

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible and less than four (4) years out of Residency.
  • Hold an active state license (any state will suffice).
  • Current DEA.
  • Updated BLS/ACLS.
  • Doctor of Medicine Degree from an accredited college or university approved by the Department of Education.
  • Strong working knowledge of computers/skills to access the computerized patient record system (CPRS) utilized by the client.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the attending for inpatient and outpatient services on a 24-hour basis.
  • Perform evaluations involving complete history and physical examinations and the ordering of laboratory studies relevant to the patient’s medical problem.
  • Supervise housestaff and midlevel providers and assist with their evaluation and management of patients.
  • Perform specialty specific procedures including but not limited to: Arterial/venous blood sampling, thoracentesis, arterial and venous catheter placement, placement of central venous lines/acute dialysis catheters/PA catheters, intubation, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, lumbar puncture, joint aspiration, placement of NG/feeding tubes, aspiration of subcutaneous fluid collections, bladder catheterizations, and performing portable ultrasound.
  • Provide consultative services in the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Emergency Department, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care Unit, General Medicine and Surgical Units, and outpatient Pulmonary Clinics.
  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up and clinic intervention, including comprehensive patient assessment, health history, physical examination, and patient education to patients in the Primary Care setting.
  • Make physician-to-physician contact calls with private and client physicians regarding referral of patients.
  • Make telephone arrangements with appropriate physicians at tertiary care medical centers to arrange for referral of patients to other medical centers.
  • Enter all notes, request diagnostic tests, consultative requests, order medications and resulting reports into the computerized patient record system (CPRS) on the day of the visit.
  • Maintain sufficient written or typed information to allow for entry in CPRS at a later time in the event of computer system failure.
  • Ensure documentation meets medical center policies/Clinical Practice Guideline and Joint Commission/HCFA standards for documentation and subsequent coding.
