About The Position

The major role will be to evaluate patients and enter computerized orders on new consults, patients undergoing radiation therapy treatments and patients returning for follow up visits in conjunction with the radiation oncologist. The goal is to support the clinical efforts of the radiation oncologist; produce strong performance in the areas of clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, transitions of care and resource management. The radiation oncologist delivers health services within the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant; manages and oversees the physician/patient relationship in accordance with the standards of medical practice in the community. Participate in hospital health management initiatives; participates in coverage and call schedules as established by Hospital. Proven ability to work collaboratively with all members of the health care team toward safe, efficient transition of patients to and from the inpatient setting. Proven ability to work successfully with best practice guidelines and utilization review. Basic Personal Computer competence.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program with a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Minimum of 1 year of Advanced Practice Nurse experience in a hospital setting required.
  • Current License/Certification with the State of New Jersey.
  • National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification required.
  • American Heart Association BLS certificate.
  • Basic Personal Computer competence.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 1 year of practicing as a Physician Assistant in a hospital or outpatient clinical setting desired.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed history and physical examination of oncology patients- both outpatient and inpatient with the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Provide follow up care under direct supervision of Radiation Oncologist.
  • Perform and record weekly Progress Note/OTV with Radiation Oncologist.
  • Order diagnostics including laboratory data and imaging studies and review the same, arrange appropriate follow up care and treatment as needed.
  • Assess and treat side effects from radiation course under direct supervision of Radiation Oncologist.
  • Dictate Completion of Therapy notes on patients completing superficial radiation and external beam radiation therapy treatments, excluding: SBRT, SRS, ablations, and brachytherapy, which are dictated by attending radiation oncologist only.
  • Assess need and provide referral to Smoking Cessation- Inspira Quit Center
  • Review patient’s EMR before patient visit and ensure it contains all appropriate information needed to assess the patient,
  • Perform primary on call. The Radiation Oncologist to be used as back-up.
  • Aide in professional billing review and add/correct as directed.
  • Participate in physician quality assurance chart rounds.
  • Attend weekly Tumor Boards.
  • Evaluate and help enroll patient for clinical trials.
  • Ability to answer patient and referring physician questions the direction of the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Assist Radiation Oncologist with various tasks including Power Point presentations, research projects, and clinical trial referrals.
  • Evaluate newly hospitalized patients when the radiation oncologist is not immediately available.
  • Evaluate patients with a change in medical status, including chest pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, shortness of breath, and increase in frequency or severity of pain, radiation reactions, etc. See these patients, make prompt evaluations as soon as possible, and notify the radiation oncologist ASAP of all major problems.
  • Reorder sleep medications, pain medications, IV/s, etc.
  • Develop positive relations with community physicians, Department nurses, social workers, dieticians, and other staff.
  • Perform daily handoff with radiation oncologist.
  • Resolve conflicts with physicians and co-workers in quiet and professional manner.
  • Respond positively to suggestions from physician and non-physician co-workers.
  • Provide prompt responses to calls from all areas of the Department, including nursing.
  • Maintain friendly relations with patients and families and avoid confrontations.
  • Completes all documentation for the day prior to the completion of your shift, including consultation, follow up, OTV notes, billing documentation.
  • Comply with Department guidelines adopted by the hospital relating to disease management, medications, and testing.
  • Maintain membership on the hospital medical staff.
  • Maintain Continuing Education Units per Medical Staff by-laws annually in topics related to inpatient medicine.
  • Achieve and maintain certification by the American Heart Association in advanced cardiac life support.
  • Deliver health services within the scope of practice of a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Manage and oversee the provider /patient relationship in accordance with the standards of medical practice in the community for a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Participate in schedules as established by Hospital.
  • Maintain adequate, timely, complete records with respect to all services rendered and shall comply with all state, and federal rules and regulations, as well as Hospital policies and Medical Staff bylaws.
  • Assist in the maintenance of compliance with the requirements of DNV, the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Obtain the necessary informed consent and signed consent forms pursuant to Hospital policy for performance of professional services.
  • To the extent applicable to services provided, comply with the National Patient Safety Goals, participate in the Hospital’s medical error reduction reporting process, and participate in other Hospital efforts related to patient safety and quality assurance and performance improvement.
  • Participate in Hospital quality improvement efforts including development of clinical pathways, core measure implementation, and other quality and cost reduction efforts by the hospital.
  • Comply with Hospital policies regarding notification of patient’s primary care physician during a hospital stay and upon discharge.
