About The Position

The Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician Assistant - Cardiothoracic to assist in the operating room. This role involves supporting residents or staff physicians in cardiothoracic surgery, including opening and closing incisions, vein harvesting, and other duties as directed. The Physician Assistant will also be responsible for emergency care within their scope of practice, administering medications, ordering emergency resuscitative drugs, performing CPR, and documenting patient encounters in the VA electronic health record. Compliance with VAMC policies and procedures, including those related to narcotic control, personnel, infection control, and medical records, is required. The position requires the Physician Assistant to be physically present at the facility to perform services.

Requirements

  • Any state license honored.
  • NCCPA certified.
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • A minimum of one year of experience performing as a first or second assist to residents or staff physicians.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS certification is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operating room as the first or second surgical assistant to the resident or staff physician to help open and close all incisions pertinent to CT surgery, harvest veins and other duties as directed.
  • Perform emergency care within their Scope of Practice and according to the Milwaukee VAMC policies and procedures in an emergency, pending the arrival of a physician.
  • Perform any procedure, administer or order any medications that would normally be ordered.
  • Order any emergency resuscitative drugs required during an attempted Code procedure until a senior staff physician or resident physician is present.
  • Perform CPR and assist in any capacity, including medical resuscitation or surgical operative resuscitation in accordance with current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation standards, required by the physician at hand.
  • Perform Basic Life Support.
  • Document patient treatment in any/all clinical records immediately following the procedure, including documenting in the patient's electronic medical record.
  • Comply with appropriate and applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of Milwaukee VAMC.
  • Provide documentation of workload for all patient encounters entered into the VA electronic health record.
