This role serves as a clinical resource for rehabilitation staff in a focused area of clinical expertise, planning and conducting treatment programs for patients. The specialist assists management in the planning, development, organization, and supervision of the specified clinical specialty area. Responsibilities include evaluating new patients, setting objective measurable treatment goals for functional outcome, establishing appropriate treatment programs, and documenting the same. The specialist administers diagnostic tests to determine the extent of patient impairment and prognosis for improvement, carries out appropriate treatment modalities, and re-evaluates patients as needed, modifying the treatment plan based on progress. They provide objective, analytic documentation of patient care, patient/family education, and communication with other caregivers. Effective communication with medical/allied health personnel regarding patient progress, needs, and discharge planning is essential. The role involves providing instruction in therapeutic procedures for patients and families, assisting in training new personnel, and providing guidance to Physical Therapist Assistants, Aides, and students. Maintaining departmental policies, procedures, quality assessment programs, and safety standards is required. The specialist attends meetings as required and enhances professional growth through education programs, literature, and workshops. Daily statistical records of patient activity and charges are maintained. The role also includes performing other assigned duties and providing service excellence in a manner that reflects the hospital's commitment to CARES (compassion, accountability, respect, excellence, and service).
