About The Position

Lead introductory adventure trips for Grinnell College students that minimize risk, minimize impact, maximize learning, and maximize enjoyment.

Requirements

  • Completion of PHE-206-01: Adventure Leadership (previously PHE-195-01)
  • Current CPR certification or ability to successfully obtain CPR certification within one month of employment (certification provided by PEAR)
  • Current wilderness medicine certification (wilderness first aid, advanced wilderness first aid, or wilderness first responder) or ability to successfully obtain wilderness medicine certification within first semester of employment (certification provided by PEAR)
  • Have a valid driver's license or be able to obtain a valid driver's license within four months of employment
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment with varying conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation

Responsibilities

  • Work with co-trip leader(s) to plan outdoor adventure trips of one to seven days in length for groups of 6-20 people
  • Assist with trip logistics including itineraries, pre-trip handouts, emergency action plans, trip equipment reservations, shuttles, and meal planning
  • Prepare participants for trips through pre-trip email communication and by co-facilitating pre-trip meetings
  • Drive participants to and from trip locations in college provided transportation
  • Co-teach technical outdoor skills and environmental ethics for minimizing impact to trip participants
  • Manage risk, follow safety protocols, and enforce program policies while leading adventure trips
  • Administer wilderness first aid and/or CPR if needed
