Photonic Assembly and Test Technician

CACI•Florham Park, NJ

About The Position

Join CACI’s Optical and Photonic Solutions (OPS) team, which develops custom photonic hardware for U.S. Government applications. The technician contributes to developing and constructing photonic hardware in support of research and development laboratory efforts and production programs. The role includes fabricating and integrating fiber-optic subassemblies, performing optical and electrical tests, documenting and presenting results, supporting design-to-production transitions, assembling test sets and fixtures, managing materials and equipment, maintaining the laboratory, and ensuring compliance with the OPS quality system.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in engineering or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, skill, and experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on photonic or electrical fabrication, testing, and measurement experience.
  • Ability to follow detailed work instructions or test procedures.
  • Prior experience with custom fine assembly.
  • Computer proficiency and competent use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Good written and oral interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. person able to receive export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Photonic qualifications are strongly desired.
  • Experience in photonics research and development, preferably with high-power (>1 W) fiber amplifiers or lasers.
  • Experience with optical fiber fusion splicers, cleavers, and re-coaters.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge using and operating passive fiber-optic components such as splitters, WDMs, and isolators.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge using and operating active optoelectronic devices such as semiconductor laser diodes, photodiodes, and modulators.
  • Proficiency with lightwave measurement equipment, including power detectors, optical spectrum analyzers, polarization-extinction ratio meters, polarimeters, and optical time-domain reflectometers, and skill in analyzing and interpreting instrument data.
  • Certification in hand soldering in compliance with the J-STD-0001 space addendum is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with electrical fabrication and rework equipment, including solder stations.
  • Experience with electrical measurement equipment, including voltmeters, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.

Responsibilities

  • Independently fabricate intricate fiber-optic subassemblies and integrate them with electrical and mechanical components for breadboard, prototype, and production units.
  • Perform optical and electrical testing according to work instructions.
  • Organize, document, and present data for review and analysis by design and test engineers.
  • Collaborate with engineers to support the transition of photonic subsystem designs into production.
  • Assemble test sets and test fixtures as required by the program.
  • Request materials and equipment needed for assembly and testing of photonic subassemblies.
  • Maintain the laboratory and laboratory equipment.
