The Photonic Assembly and Test Technician contributes to the development and construction of photonic hardware, supporting research and development laboratory efforts as well as production programs. The position involves fabricating and integrating fiber-optic subassemblies, testing and documenting results, supporting design transitions into production, managing assembly resources, maintaining laboratory equipment, and complying with OPS’s quality system.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in engineering or a closely related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, skill, and experience.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on photonic or electrical fabrication, test, and measurement experience.
  • Ability to follow detailed work instructions or test procedures.
  • Prior experience with custom fine assembly.
  • Computer proficiency and competent use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Good written and oral interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. person able to receive export-controlled information.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong photonic qualifications.
  • Experience in photonics research and development, preferably with high-power (>1 W) fiber amplifiers or lasers.
  • Experience with optical fiber fusion splicers, cleavers, and re-coaters.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge using passive fiber-optic components such as splitters, WDMs, and isolators.
  • Experience or demonstrated knowledge using active optoelectronic devices such as semiconductor laser diodes, photodiodes, and modulators.
  • Proficiency with lightwave measurement equipment, including power detectors, optical spectrum analyzers, polarization-extinction ratio meters, polarimeters, and optical time-domain reflectometers, and skill analyzing and interpreting instrument data.
  • Certification in hand soldering in compliance with the J-STD-0001 space addendum.
  • Experience with electrical fabrication and rework equipment, including solder stations.
  • Experience with electrical measurement equipment, including voltmeters, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.

Responsibilities

  • Independently fabricate intricate fiber-optic subassemblies and integrate them with electrical and mechanical components for breadboard, prototype, and production units.
  • Perform optical and electrical testing according to work instructions; organize, document, and present data for review and analysis by design and test engineers.
  • Collaborate with engineers to support transition of photonic subsystem designs into production.
  • Assemble test sets and test fixtures as required by the program.
