About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I obtains blood specimens from patients of all ages through skin puncture or venipuncture for clinical laboratory analysis. The position works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. The role also includes clerical and specimen-processing duties, maintaining supplies and work areas, and providing support to other laboratory functions as assigned. This is a per diem position with a variable shift.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained current.

Nice To Haves

A minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipuncture on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for laboratory analysis.
Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
Maintain adequate knowledge of terminology for laboratory tests ordered.
Communicate courteously with patients and visitors and use appropriate telephone etiquette.
Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment to collect specimens from newborns through geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Prepare specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
As needed, pick up samples at the hospital or operating room; assist laboratory specialties with sorting and storing samples; assist pathology; conduct inventory; replenish and order supplies; handle mail pickup and delivery, faxing, telephone answering, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
