About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician I collects blood specimens from patients of all ages by skin puncture or venipuncture for clinical laboratory analysis. The role works under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Supervisor. Duties also include specimen processing, clerical and communication tasks, maintaining supplies and work areas, and assisting with other laboratory operations as assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
BLS certification within 45 days of hire and maintained as current.

Nice To Haves

At least two years of clinical laboratory experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform skin punctures and venipunctures on patients of all ages to obtain blood specimens for laboratory analysis.
Perform computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties.
Maintain adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology.
Communicate politely and courteously with patients and visitors, including appropriate telephone etiquette.
Use proper phlebotomy techniques and equipment when collecting specimens from newborns through geriatric patients.
Process microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank specimens.
Process specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stock routine supplies and maintain the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, and work areas.
Process or load specimens onto automated laboratory instrumentation according to established policies and procedures.
As needed, pick up samples at the hospital or operating room; assist laboratory specialties with sorting and storing samples; assist pathology; conduct inventory; replenish and order supplies; handle mail pickup and delivery, faxing, phone calls, and product deliveries.
Perform other tasks or responsibilities assigned by the department manager or director.
