About The Position

A-Team Solutions is seeking a Phlebotomist for a full-time position at the Clermont VA clinic. The role involves performing phlebotomy and urine specimen collection on a diverse patient population, including those who may be difficult to draw from. The Phlebotomist will work as a technician, obtaining venous blood specimens using appropriate techniques and materials, and preparing the phlebotomy site. This position also includes assisting in training other personnel, performing specimen processing procedures, administering glucose tolerance tests, and ensuring the Phlebotomy Room is disinfected and closed at the end of the shift. The Phlebotomist will also be responsible for contacting Medical Staff in cases of patient emergencies and communicating with patients empathetically.

Requirements

  • High school graduate.
  • Certified phlebotomy training program.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in phlebotomy in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
  • Experience with accessioning of laboratory specimens
  • Experience with processing of laboratory specimens
  • Capable of reading standard operating procedures and adhering them to the current laboratory processes.
  • Communicate clearly the daily status and problems about the laboratory output to team members and senior management of the service.
  • Computer literate.
  • BLS (American Heart Association)

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture) and urine specimen collection on patients ranging from minimally to critically ill who may be hard to draw.
  • Obtains venous blood specimens from adults using knowledge of human anatomy, aseptic technique, and phlebotomy material selection (i.e. vacutainer, syringe, butterfly).
  • Uses judgment in selection of phlebotomy site based upon the patient's condition, age group, and type of test to be performed.
  • Prepares phlebotomy site for proper specimen collection, based upon knowledge of blood specimen types, request forms, anticoagulants and transport conditions testing procedures.
  • Assists in training other personnel (employees and student trainees) in proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques.
  • Performs processing procedures (centrifugation, splitting specimens into aliquots under the guidance of others, requiring knowledge of the correct type tube, amount of specimen needed, and procedure to be followed according to the test requested).
  • Performs glucose tolerance testing by administering pretest substances, drawing blood at specific time intervals.
  • Assists in disinfecting and closing the Phlebotomy Room at the end of the shift.
  • Contacts Medical Staff in handling patients in cases of fainting, convulsions, and illness.
  • Conveys to the patient the intention of performing a phlebotomy while showing understanding and empathy for the patient's condition.
