About The Position

A-Team Solutions is seeking three certified phlebotomy technicians for a full-time contract position at the VA hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Coverage will start upon credentialing for an initial period of 1 year, with the option to extend. The expected schedule is Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
  • One year or more of experience
  • BLS certification in accordance with the American Heart Association

Responsibilities

  • Proficiently perform phlebotomy following proper procedures for drawing and redrawing blood.
  • Utilize various methods and techniques to draw blood from patients, including venipuncture and finger sticks, for routine or STAT tests from inpatients, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients.
  • Review test request orders prior to collecting specimens to determine if the patient has been properly prepared (e.g., fasting, special diet, medication).
  • Adhere to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood, including wearing gloves and using needle protection devices.
  • Provide initial aid for patient reactions to administered materials or procedures and call codes for serious reactions or emergencies.
  • Process all incoming laboratory specimens during the pre-analytical phase, ensuring correct collection, timing, containers, preservatives, anticoagulants, temperatures, and patient preparation.
  • Properly label and identify all specimens throughout the procurement process to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Process, order, package, and ship specimens for testing at reference laboratories in accordance with their specifications.
  • Comply with safety, infection control, and universal precaution guidelines for handling specimens.
  • Package specimens for transport according to Federal, state, and local standards.
  • Accurately enter laboratory test orders into the Laboratory Information System and complete reference laboratory test request forms.
  • Meet deadlines for specimen shipments.
  • Provide information, guidance, and technical advice to physicians and clinic personnel on specimen collection and submission.
  • Research the availability of unusual testing.
  • Transcribe completed laboratory reports from reference laboratories into VistA.
  • Report critical values by telephone to the ordering provider.
  • Perform testing duties in the Anticoagulation Clinic as directed.
  • Manually enter test results into VistA for tests performed at reference laboratories.
  • Greet patients at outpatient draw stations, check identification, order and accession tests into VistA, instruct patients on proper collection techniques, and provide necessary equipment and containers.
  • Answer telephones as needed.
  • Review, process, and file shipping manifests for testing services provided to Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and route specimens to the appropriate laboratory section.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
