Performs routine and special blood specimen collection for all age specific patients. This role involves collecting products or specimens for basic procedures, potentially performing point-of-care testing, and adhering to strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. The phlebotomist will assist in patient care before, during, and after specimen collection, determine appropriate test combinations and volumes, and demonstrate knowledge of pre-analytic variables affecting specimen analysis. Familiarity with test synonyms, abbreviations, and cross-referencing is essential. The position requires utilization of the laboratory computer information system, quality assurance data to enhance services, and recommending procedural changes for quality improvement and customer satisfaction. Maintaining hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and standards for quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control is crucial. Compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements through mandatory in-services, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement participation is expected. The role also involves maintaining and upgrading personal professional development, organizing supplies and equipment, notifying appropriate personnel for re-ordering or repairs, and assisting in the training of new associates or students.
