Performs routine and special blood specimen collection for all age specific patients. This role involves collecting products or specimens for basic procedures, potentially performing point-of-care testing, and adhering to strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. The phlebotomist will assist in patient care before, during, and after specimen collection, determine appropriate test combinations and minimum volumes, and be knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables affecting specimen analysis. Familiarity with test synonyms, abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types is essential. The role requires utilization of the laboratory computer information system, quality assurance data to enhance services, and recommendations for procedural changes to address quality issues and improve customer/patient satisfaction. Maintaining hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and standards for quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control is crucial. Compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements through mandatory in-services, continuing education, and participation in continuous quality improvement is expected. The phlebotomist will also maintain and upgrade personal professional development, manage appropriate supply levels, organize supplies and equipment, notify associates of re-order needs or equipment repair, and assist in training new associates or students.
