Performs routine and special blood specimen collection for all age specific patients. This role involves collecting products or specimens for basic procedures, potentially performing point-of-care testing, and adhering to strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. The phlebotomist assists in patient care before, during, and after specimen collection, determines appropriate test combinations and minimum volumes, and is knowledgeable about pre-analytic variables that may affect specimen analysis. They are familiar with test synonyms, abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types. The role utilizes the laboratory computer information system, quality assurance data to enhance services, and recommends procedural changes to address quality issues and improve customer/patient satisfaction. Maintaining hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and standards for quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control is crucial. Compliance with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements through mandatory in-services, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement participation is expected. The phlebotomist also maintains and upgrades personal professional development, manages appropriate supply levels, organizes supplies and equipment, and notifies appropriate personnel for re-ordering or repairs. Additionally, they may assist in training new associates or students.
