Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes. Determines and executes the best method for obtaining biological specimens (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) from patients of all ages to ensure quality specimens for testing. Orders appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers. Interacts with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection. Prepares aliquots of samples and shipping batches to move specimens within the hospital and to contracted labs. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations. Fosters cooperation to support smooth workflow handoffs. Maintains laboratory supplies inventory and conserves resources by using equipment and materials appropriately. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment problems within scope of ability. Practices proper patient identification and ensures complete and accurate registration, including demographics, insurance, date of service, ordering provider, and special flags. Actively participates in the laboratory quality program and supports training of new staff and students as a mentor and resource. Adapts quickly to varying workflows and assigned environments.
