About The Position

Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes. Determines and executes the best method for obtaining biological specimens (venipuncture, capillary, heel-stick) from patients of all ages to ensure quality specimens for testing. Orders appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers. Interacts with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection. Prepares aliquots of samples and shipping batches to move specimens within the hospital and to contracted labs. Maintains a safe and clean working environment, laboratory supplies inventory, and conserves resources. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshoots equipment problems. Practices proper patient identification and ensures complete and accurate registration. Actively participates in the laboratory quality program and supports training of new staff and students. Adapts quickly to varying workflows and assigned environments.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Specialized training in phlebotomy
  • One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role
  • Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible)
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse personalities inside and outside the organization
  • Ability to travel to various sites as needed
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule with minimal notice to meet business needs

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role
