About The Position

The Monash Japanese Language Education Hub (MJLEH) Scholarships support graduate researchers to complete a PhD at Monash University on a topic related to the acquisition and/or teaching of Japanese Language and Cultural Literacy. Awardees will also become Fellows of the Nippon Foundation. One award is made available each year, up to a total of two awards to be held concurrently. The MJLEH was established in 1996 with a grant from the Nippon Foundation. Housed in the Japanese Studies Centre and affiliated with the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics (Faculty of Arts), the Hub provides a variety of activities and programs dedicated to improving and supporting the teaching and learning of Japanese in Australia.

Requirements

  • Excellent academic track record in a relevant field (e.g., Languages, Linguistics, Education, or relevant Social Science discipline).
  • Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded.
  • Meet eligibility requirements, including English-language proficiency skills, to undertake a PhD in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Must be enrolled full-time and on campus.
  • Must not already hold a PhD.
  • Discuss research proposal with Dr Satoshi Nambu before submitting an application.
  • Submit a cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant’s suitability.
  • Submit a brief Research Proposal that fits within the broad project aims and objectives, and demonstrates some understanding of the area of research.
  • Submit a curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience.
  • Submit a full statement of academic records, degree certificates and official grading system (if available), supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation.
  • Submit English language proficiency test results (if applicable).
  • Provide names and contact details of 2 academic referees.
