About The Position

Stripe is offering PhD machine learning engineering internships for summer 2027 across its Applied ML, Data Science, Risk, and Payments organizations. Interns will contribute to projects that enhance Stripe products, including machine-learning applications such as fraud detection, enhanced support, and user behavior prediction. Potential projects include the Stripe Assistant and Stripe Foundation Model. The role involves developing and deploying large-scale machine-learning systems and taking models from design and training through improvement and launch, with the goal of creating production systems that support businesses around the world. Interns collaborate across teams, incorporate feedback, learn unfamiliar technologies, and communicate their progress.

Requirements

• Pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field, with expected graduation in winter 2027 or spring/summer 2028.
• Practical programming and machine-learning experience demonstrated through projects, coursework, or research.
• Familiarity with languages such as Python, Scala, and Spark, and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn.
• Expertise in machine-learning areas such as supervised and unsupervised learning and ML operations; experience with large language models or reinforcement learning may also be relevant.
• Ability to work collaboratively and receive and apply feedback from stakeholders.
• Proactive approach to learning unfamiliar systems and ability to understand complex systems independently.
• Intent to return to the degree program after the internship or co-op.

Nice To Haves

• Two years of university education or equivalent experience, with in-depth knowledge in specific machine-learning domains.
• Peer-reviewed articles published and presented at top-tier venues.
• Experience writing high-quality pull requests, maintaining good test coverage, and completing projects with minimal defects.
• Familiarity with navigating new codebases and managing work across different programming languages.
• Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to explain work to teammates and broader Stripe audiences.
