Job Summary: Location: Methodist Hospital Address: 8303 Dodge St, Omaha, NE Work Schedule: Day shifts, on-call rotation The position requires the ability to work with a multiplicity of databases relating to pharmaceuticals, medications, and supplies. Specific activities include informatics oversight of the automated dispensing systems and the interrelationship to pharmacy personnel; financial analysis of daily charges, the charge master and quarterly pricing update management; barcode scanning triaging and solution assessment; Cerner interface for PharmNet and other applications that are included within the Cerner catalog billing question triage for the department/hospital/public. Additionally, the position requires mastering the use of all software, hardware and automated systems of the department to a level of 'expert'. Performs various functions associated with an institutional drug distribution system. This includes, but is not limited to, the use of drug dispensing and compounding automation, the viewing of medication orders in the pharmacy computerized system, the procedures that apply to record keeping and dispensing of controlled substances, non-formulary drugs, the delivery and exchange of medications, the acquisition of pharmaceuticals and the documentation associated with this acquisition.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in computer science or healthcare related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years pharmacy experience in lieu of degree considered.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience with pharmacy automation or application/maintenance required.
  • Registration with the State of Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services as a Pharmacy Technician (RPHT.NE) at the start of employment required.
  • Certified by the national pharmacy technician certification program (CPHT) at the start of employment required.
  • Interpersonal Skills: To communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients and the public.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze medical literature, outcome and safety data, and financial information. Must be able to interpret and evaluate patient specific information to formulate patient care plans.
  • Management Skills: Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.
  • Time Management Skills: Ability to prioritize time and tasks according to the needs of patients and the Department of Pharmacy without prompting.

Responsibilities

  • Pharmacy payroll management. Monitors departmental staffing and completes appropriate entries into Kronos, as needed. Accurately completes payroll, PTO, FML in required time, as needed. Addresses any issues dealing with staff to assure accurate compensation, as needed.
  • Vendor software management. Supports multiple vendor software systems to meet the needs of the user by completing necessary tasks in an accurate and timely manner. Communicates and troubleshoots directly with vendors to assure operations of key medication management systems.
  • Automation technology systems management. Understanding of the automation technology hardware and software and the associated interfaces to each system. Work with pharmacy, nursing, and Information Technology (I.T.) staff to troubleshoot and resolve issues involving the medication management process.
  • Pharmacy charging system management. Reviews and reconciles drug costs and patient charges. Identifies and provides follow-up for potential issues with patient charges. Maintains medication database and documentation system for billing.
  • Reference training manual and development management. Maintains reference materials to programs or systems to provide maintenance and means of inquiry by documenting the functionality.
  • Informatics excellence. Tests code to ensure functionality by following prescribed “test environment” rules. Maintains barcode medication administration database and resolves and provides follow-up for any issues related to barcode scanning. Maintains and updates project plans under the direction of the Pharmacy Informatics Coordinator and Pharmacy Operations Coordinator to ensure completion in an accurate, timely manner. Works independently or with a group on assigned projects or requests.
  • Customer service excellence. Resolves problems to ensure Health System customer needs are met by troubleshooting, identifying problems and defining and implementing solutions.
  • Understanding of all supportive areas for medication management process. Have a working knowledge and understanding of ordering and medication procurement. Have a working knowledge and understanding of the medication use process, including, but not limited to unit dose, IV room, and controlled substances processes.
  • Teamwork exhibited by actions. Completion of orders to point of delivery (visual inspections while staffing).
  • Hospital-wide. Actions represent the best interest of the patient (observational). Follows all Safety Alerts: Code Red; Code Triage; Code Adam; Plain Language Code.
