About The Position

Under the general direction of the registered Staff Pharmacist, to perform specialized clerical work in the preparation of prescriptions and other medications for inpatients and outpatients; maintain comprehensive patient medication files; work with and assist pharmacist in the maintenance and manufacture of routine intravenous solutions and special solutions as requested by physicians; and does other related work as required. This is the full journey level class within the Pharmacy Technician series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Pharmacy Technician I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the ability to work independently, exercising judgment, performing related purchasing and receiving/storing duties, and initiative to a specific assignment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Under the guidance and supervision of the Staff Registered Pharmacist, the technicians are responsible for the bulk of the medication distribution and processing of prescriptions and medication orders.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program as evidenced by receipt of certification/registration by the State of California.
  • One to two years working as a pharmacy technician in a health care facility or community pharmacy.
  • Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Good customer service (physicians, nurses, and patients).
  • Knowledge of professional standards and practices; federal, Board of Pharmacy, the Joint Commission and DHS laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to patient care, and dispensing of legend and non-legend pharmaceuticals and poisons.
  • Knowledge of proper storage and security procedures used in working with pharmaceutical materials and products.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of types and names of drugs and medications.
  • Knowledge of Medi-Cal/MIA laws dispensing limits, cash and billing requirements.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of weight and liquid measures commonly used in pharmacies.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations affecting a pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of procedures used in the manufacturing of intravenous solutions (I.V.) and in the prepackaging of tables and capsules.
  • Knowledge of hospital established policies quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to make basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to maintain comprehensive reports relative to the dispensing of medications.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to safely handle pharmaceutical and pharmacy equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret prescriptions from physician’s orders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to work effectively under stress and in emergency situations.
  • Proficiently utilize and understand the Pyxis Management System.
