About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician will provide services such as reading and interpreting prescriptions and medication orders written by medical staff, selecting and retrieving medications of correct strength and dosage form prescribed, transcribing prescription data to labels using computer systems, prepare prescriptions for review by a pharmacist prior to dispensing, giving pertinent patient instructions when appropriate; complete stock medication orders as instructed by the pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician is expected to dress professionally at all times and will be required to wear a uniform or scrubs. The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing and should not be tight-fitting or low-cut without an undershirt. Open-toe shoes are not permitted. In the event the Pharmacy Technician's dress does not comply with the expectations of the MDC, the Pharmacy Technician will not be permitted entry inside the MDC. The Government will not be financially responsible for the time it takes to return to the MDC with proper clothing.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must have a certificate of training for Pharmacy Technician services from an approved state program.
  • Must have a Pharmacy Technician license valid in the state of New York.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of Pharmacy Technician experience.
  • Possess knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures to perform job activities on various types of medical equipment and automated systems, and safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment.
  • Possess the ability to relate and deal effectively with Physicians, peers, Adult in Custody (AIC), and others; to recognize, report, and record changes in patients' physical and emotional condition; and to administer medication.
  • Must have the ability to read, understand, count, speak fluently, and legibly write the English language.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.
  • College-level training in the sciences and mathematics, and past correctional experience are desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform self-carry medication line daily or when directed by the Chief Pharmacist, HSA, or designee.
  • Assist the staff with conducting medication pass (pill line) as needed and when scheduled.
  • Assist the staff pharmacist in ordering, stocking, and dispensing prescription and non-prescription medications while demonstrating knowledge of the budgetary guidelines and BOP formulary constraints.
  • Maintain pharmacy areas in a clean and orderly fashion consistent with departmental safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Assist the pharmacist in maintaining stock of up-to-date medications (checking for outdates per policy) in the main pharmacy, satellite camp, crash carts, emergency bags, and Pyxis.
  • Assist the pharmacist with maintaining stock of forms as needed and updating pill line/restricted medication cards for AICs.
  • Assist the pharmacist in preparing unit doses or pre-packaged medications.
  • Maintain the narcotics count and the needle and syringe inventories.
  • Maintain and restock adequate supplies for the Pyxis.
  • Possess a working knowledge and maintain technical computer skills pertaining to pharmacy issues.
  • Must participate in Improving Organizational Performance Data and Quality Assurance Activities as directed by the Pharmacist or Health Service Administrator.
