About The Position

The Dental Hygienist will provide dental prophylaxis, preventive oral health services, and periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) referred by the Dental Staff and will assist the Dental Officer with other related duties. The Dental Hygienist will work an estimated 16 sessions per week. Services will be scheduled between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, five (5) days a week, with a thirty-minute unpaid lunch period, excluding federal holidays. The schedule is subject to change based on the institution's variable needs and the unpredictable nature of the correctional environment.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be certified/licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of New York.
  • Must hold a current certification and registration in General Dentistry and Periodontology as a Dental Hygienist.
  • Dental radiology certification required.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Nice To Haves

  • Anesthesia certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience is preferred.
  • Correctional Environment experience is preferred.
  • Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dental prophylaxis to AICs who are referred by the dental staff.
  • Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
  • Monitor oral hygiene and periodontal condition on each patient seen for dental prophylaxis.
  • Assess and document vital signs.
  • Complete necessary dental x-rays as specified by the dentist.
  • Sterilize instruments used for prophylaxis and other instruments as specified by the dental or medical staff.
  • Perform necessary paperwork related to scheduling patients for dental prophylaxis as directed by the dental staff.
  • Documents care within the Bureau's Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
  • Properly dispose of paper documents, such as shredding, when warranted.
  • Assist the Dental or Chief Dentist with patient care when and if needed.
