Assists licensed pharmacists in technical duties related to the preparation and distribution of medications. This includes accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications, handling hazardous drugs and controlled substances, and assisting with medication distribution tasks. The role also involves screening phone calls, managing pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Specific duties may include performing nonsterile compounding, sterile IV admixture, inspecting medication storage areas, completing medication admission histories, and potentially participating in quality improvement initiatives or training other technicians. The position requires adherence to all organizational policies, legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards, and supporting area leaders. Responsibilities also include obtaining and recording patient demographic information, data entry, insurance verification, label generation, cashiering, and developing competence in third-party billing functions. The technician must demonstrate age-appropriate patient care knowledge and skills. Depending on the facility, duties may extend to obtaining immunization certification and performing immunizations under pharmacist supervision, or operating a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
