About The Position

Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, a leader in Cancer Care, is seeking an experienced Full Time Pharmacy Tech for our Cancer Center in Fairfax. SCOPE: Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist working within a licensed pharmacy, performs the technical, nonjudgemental aspects of medication preparation, distribution, record keeping and inventory control. Tasks are subject to sequential or final verification by a registered nurse or a registered pharmacist. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards. Specific state law may regulate that only licensed individuals perform compounding or mixing responsibilities. As a result, certain incumbents are prohibited from said tasks.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a pharmacy with IV skills.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate, State Pharmacy Board requirement recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of chemotherapy and other hazardous drug preparation.
  • Proficiency in IV Admixture procedures, including using aseptic technique in the preparation of medication, calculations, maintenance of a clean area, and complete documentation.
  • Inventory management, including purchasing and control of drugs and supplies, avoiding stockouts and excess inventory.
  • Process daily purchase orders, review and follow up with tracking shipments, deliveries, receiving, and order confirmations.
  • Maintain accurate data, prepare reports, and assist with weekly/monthly audits and reporting.
  • Perform monthly virtual audits on all clinics’ Lynx machines to identify short, dated inventory and overstock.
  • Analyze Lynx reports to solve inventory issues and capture every billable charge.
  • Work with vendors to set up, maintain, and close accounts as necessary.
  • Access vendor files and catalogs (Wolfmed, HCL, McKesson, etc.).
  • Coordinate deliveries and pickups between clinics and vendors.
  • Accurately calculate patient-specific doses based on mg/m² or mg/kg dosing with minimal exposure risks.
  • Follow IV admixture procedures, including aseptic technique, accurate calculations, clean area maintenance, and complete documentation.
  • Under direct supervision, admix drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and preparing all drugs within OSHA guidelines and interoffice guidelines.
  • Calculate correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Assist in counting controlled drugs weekly and maintain records.
  • Properly dispose of all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IVs.
  • Assist in cleaning hoods daily checking drugs monthly for outdates and other quality assurance activities as assigned.
  • Prepare sterile compounds with no contamination, as evidenced by test solutions.
  • Prioritize stats and prepare next day’s batch in a timely manner.
  • Customer service to handle day-to-day interoffice inquiries, to support nursing staff, patients and clinic personnel.
  • Interdepartmental Coordination.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
