About The Position

Nemours is seeking a Pharmacy Student Intern (CASUAL/PRN) to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, Delaware. This is a year-long internship program during the school year, where students work every third weekend (both Saturday and Sunday). During the summer, interns work 2-3 shifts weekly for 5 weeks (which can be nonconsecutive weeks), and during wintertime, interns work 2-3 shifts per week. There is a commitment to work 3 holidays in a year. Currently, shifts could start as early as 7:00 am or as late as 2:30 pm. These are 8.5-hour shifts, subject to change based on department needs. This Pharmacy Student Intern position is responsible for providing Pharmacy Services within the Inpatient and Outpatient Pharmacy Department of the Nemours Alfred I DuPont Hospital for Children (AIDHC). The position is responsible for assisting in the preparation (including technical aspects of preparation) and delivery of all medications to patients. This position is responsible for providing customer service to internal and external customers, working under the operational supervision of the pharmacist. The majority of tasks and responsibilities are related to preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Enrollment and in good standing status with an accredited school of pharmacy is required.
  • Delaware Pharmacy Intern License-proof of license required within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the preparation (including technical aspects of preparation) and delivery of all medications to patients.
  • Providing customer service to internal and external customers, working under the operational supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Preparing, dispensing, and distributing medications.
  • Performing various functions associated with the AIDHC drug distribution system.
  • Demonstrating familiarity with the general duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Student Intern, including knowledge, competency, and understanding of the position.
  • Cart fill, Pyxis functionality, IV preparation (e.g., syringes, admixtures, hazardous, continuous renal replacement therapy, total parenteral nutrition, etc.), unit dose packaging, filling outpatient prescriptions (data entry, third party processing, barcoding), unit inspections, oral liquid compounding, stock inventory maintenance and replenishment, code cart process, selling prescriptions at POS, delivery of prescriptions, and fielding phone calls.
  • Accurately preparing, through the proper use of equipment and techniques, individualized doses of sterile and non-sterile extemporaneous medication, in an appropriate container, labeled in an appropriate manner and stored at the recommended temperature.
  • Calculating the concentration and volume of the medication to be used prior to its preparation 100% of the time.
  • Correctly and accurately preparing and labeling unit dose medications.
  • Appropriately documenting preparation as per policy and procedure.
  • Preparing and storing medication in a manner that is compatible and stable within the anticipated time of use.
  • Weighing, measuring, mixing ingredients; compounding and preparing compounds, and preparing capsules, emulsions, liquids, suspensions, powders, ointments, and intravenous solutions using equipment such as graduates, balances, mortars, pestles, and funnels in a correct manner 100% of the time.
  • Providing proper information on labels as per policy & procedures.
  • Entering proper medication expiration dating as per expiration dating policy and procedure.
  • Preparing medication in a manner that minimizes cost due to wastage.
  • Ensuring all doses prepared are verified with a pharmacist prior to dispensing to ensure medications prepared and dispensed are correct and accurate, in an appropriate container, labeled in an appropriate manner and stored at the recommended temperature.
  • Preparing medications to assure that the turnaround time for all uncomplicated medication orders and for all stat medication orders does not exceed 1 hour and 15 minutes respectively, 100% of situations.
  • Completing the daily PO Production process in the designated start time and sequence of patient care units.
  • Removing discontinued medications from patient bins and refrigerator bins during the batch delivery process.
  • Maintaining patient medication bins 100% accurately during the medication bin fill process utilizing patch label, DC drug label, and DC patient labels.
  • Placing all prepared and checked medications in the correct patient cassette 100%.
  • Preparing patient-specific batch IV production for daily exchange within standard cycle time.
  • Properly segregating refrigerated medications from non-refrigerated medications.
  • Removing discontinued medications from production bin, patient bins, and refrigerator bins during the batch delivery process.
  • Placing all prepared and checked medications in the correct nursing unit bins 100%.
  • Preparing sterile products (IV, LVP, TPN, and Hazardous) in compliance with USP 797 and USP 800.
  • Passing Aseptic Test, Aseptic Validation/Practical, Aseptic Validation Sample, and Finger Tip Sample 100%.
  • Discarding single-dose vials within the established timeframe after opening 100% of the time based on random tracer.
  • Discarding multiple-dose vials within the established timeframe based on random tracer.
  • Ensuring 100% compliance with proper sterile PPE Garb based on a sample size inclusive of every 6 months (daily; random; minimum: 100 days per 6 months).
  • Distributing pharmacy products accurately, with the appropriate quantity and at the time the product is needed during hourly medication delivery and batch delivery.
  • Checking all doses remaining in patient bins: multi-dose drugs, inhalers, new doses, PRNs.
  • Checking expiration dates and alerting the pharmacist to replace expired medications.
  • Checking the expiration date of all patient-specific medications including IVs, POs, and refrigerated items.
  • Returning all expired items to the pharmacy.
  • Removing discontinued medication from the pharmacy return bin and returning it to the pharmacy.
  • Returning all expired/unauthorized medication to the pharmacy (i.e., home medication of discharged patient, medication removed from Pyxis).
  • Removing non-pharmacy items from the medication refrigerator (lab tubes/specimens, non-pharmacy formula) and giving them to the nurse.
  • Removing any dated insulin vials from the refrigerator and placing them in the patient bin or other proper storage location.
  • Delivering medication on an hourly basis to the appropriate storage area (med bins, refrigerator) on the nursing unit with 100% accuracy.
  • Delivering medication to the appropriate patient bin on the nursing unit to assure the correct drug is available for administration to the patient.
  • Initiating special deliveries of medications to assure that the turnaround time for all uncomplicated medication orders and for all stat medication orders does not exceed 1 hour and 15 minutes respectively, 100% of situations.
  • Retrieving all medications that are discontinued or expired from nursing units at the time of bin exchange and hourly deliveries.
  • Providing new patients with a labeled medication bin in alphabetical order 100% of the time.
  • Adhering to the Kanban Inventory system 100% of the time.
  • Maintaining and organizing inventory supply in a manner that minimizes inventory storage cost, wastage, and stock-outs.
  • Ensuring inventory is rotated properly, stored in appropriate conditions and location with 100% accuracy.
  • Completing monthly medication expiration dating assignments in a timely manner.
  • Identifying and reordering expired medications inventory and ensuring that stock is stored in accordance with manufacturer requirements.
  • Assuring the proper replacement of prescription drugs to stock upon requisitions from various departments of the hospital either manually or through the Pyxis System.
  • Ensuring the secure storage of narcotics and other controlled substances.
  • Documenting every transaction completely and accurately.
  • Ensuring no generation of discrepancies in the C2 Safe, Pyxis Medstation, or Inventory Logs.
  • Ensuring the destruction of returned controlled substance continuous medication infusions.
  • Ensuring secure storage of narcotics and other controlled substances on a regular basis.
  • Maintaining inventory records on narcotics and other forms of drugs as required by law.
  • Performing inventory counts of controlled substances on safes as per policy and procedures.
  • Participating in hospital and departmental Continuous Improvement (CI) activities.
  • Utilizing Lean Principles to analyze and resolve problems in a systematic manner.
  • Participating in departmental Rapid Process Improvement (RPI) activities.
  • Working overtime to allow coworkers to participate in department RPI.
