About The Position

Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern shall prepare, dispense and distribute medication and provide clinical monitoring and drug information to ensure optimal patient care. This role involves drug distribution and intravenous admixture throughout the hospital, competency in automated dispensing systems, and ensuring medications are appropriately barcoded. The intern will also be responsible for the accurate preparation and dispensing of medications, chemotherapy preparation, generating revenues by calculating and issuing charges, and daily documentation of pharmacy logs. Additionally, the intern will gain competency in repackaging/unit-dosing medications, aseptic technique, and utilizing technology for efficient medication delivery. The role also includes maintaining pharmacy inventory, assisting healthcare providers with phone calls, participating in educational programs, assisting with patient counseling, and participating in clinical assignments to aid in quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Student enrolled in full-time accredited pharmacy school program.
  • Minimum knowledge of drug trade and generic names and pharmacy calculations.
  • Excellent customer service behavior.
  • Organization/time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, dispense, and distribute medication.
  • Provide clinical monitoring and drug information.
  • Perform drug distribution and intravenous admixture.
  • Operate Pyxis automated dispensing systems.
  • Ensure medications are appropriately barcoded.
  • Prepare and dispense medications accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform chemotherapy preparation with competency in utilizing closed system transfer device.
  • Generate revenues by calculating, recording, and issuing charges.
  • Document all pharmacy log sheets daily.
  • Repackage/unit-dose medications using the MILT4 program.
  • Utilize aseptic technique.
  • Use technology (computer, telecommunications, Cerner system, Power Chart, Pyxis) to triage workflow for efficient medication delivery.
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by checking stock, restocking, and rotating medications and supplies.
  • Assist health care providers with phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Participate in hospital/pharmacy department-based educational programs.
  • Assist in providing patient counseling.
  • Participate in various clinical assignments to aid in providing quality patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
