About The Position

The Pet Support Services Coordinator at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) plays a vital role in connecting people and pets with the support they need during difficult times. This position focuses on community outreach, crisis support, and resource coordination designed to reduce shelter intake and help keep pets in loving homes. The role involves overseeing pet food pantry services and supporting individuals with pets facing housing instability, hospitalization, or crisis situations. The work directly impacts both people and animals across the community. This role is ideal for someone who is compassionate, organized, community-minded, and passionate about helping others through meaningful support services.

Requirements

  • Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to navigate emotionally sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy.
  • Organized, adaptable, and comfortable balancing community outreach, administrative responsibilities, and direct support services in a fast-paced environment.
  • One to three years of experience working with the public, customer service, or pet-related services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Basic math skills.
  • A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in community outreach or human services.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, communications, social sciences, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Help lead and grow the ARL’s pet support and community outreach efforts by connecting individuals and families with resources that help them continue caring for their pets.
  • Oversee pet food pantry services and work collaboratively with volunteers to ensure supplies are organized, accessible, and distributed effectively to those in need.
  • Coordinate crisis care support for individuals' pets that may be experiencing circumstances such as hospitalization, domestic violence, displacement, or other emergencies that may temporarily separate them from their pets.
  • Help promote ARL programs and educational opportunities, coordinate public outreach efforts, and identify ways to expand access to services throughout the community, including evaluating language and accessibility needs for underserved populations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and organizations, including local food pantries and social service networks, to increase access to pet food and essential supplies across the metro area.
  • Represent ARL through professional, supportive, and educational interactions that strengthen trust and connection within the community.
  • Help promote a safe and welcoming environment while supporting ARL’s mission, programs, and values.
