About The Position

Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark and America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens, is seeking a Pesticide Applicator/Landscape Gardener. This full-time, non-exempt position reports to the Vice President of Horticulture. The role involves the safe application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, monitoring plant health, performing general landscape maintenance, and supporting the preservation of historic gardens. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of horticultural practices, pest management, and a commitment to safety and compliance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid South Carolina Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
  • Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant identification, soil health, and pest management.
  • Ability to operate landscaping and pesticide application equipment safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail, recordkeeping, and commitment to safety and compliance.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Previous experience working safely with all types of landscaping and gardening equipment.
  • Effective work habits including time management, teamwork, and a proactive mindset.
  • Good communication skills and customer-focused attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional coursework in horticulture, landscaping, or plant sciences preferred.
  • Previous experience in landscape gardening and pesticide application preferred.
  • Pesticide certification is a plus.
  • Formal horticulture training or certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Safely mix, prepare, and apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Middleton Place policies.
  • Monitor and identify plant health issues, including insect infestations, diseases, and invasive species, and recommend appropriate treatments.
  • Maintain accurate records of pesticide use and submit required reports to supervisors and regulatory agencies.
  • Operate and maintain pesticide application equipment, tools, and protective gear.
  • Perform general landscape maintenance including planting, pruning, mulching, watering, mowing, edging, and seasonal clean-up.
  • Support the preservation of historic gardens by following established horticultural practices and guidelines.
  • Ensure safe practices to protect visitors, staff, animals, and the environment during all application and gardening activities.
  • Collaborate with horticulture and grounds staff to develop integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
  • Assist with special projects, seasonal displays, and events as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
