About The Position

Resident Care is responsible for the planning, coordinated development, management and implementation of long term care home nursing and personal care activities, programs, services and initiatives to the residents of a municipal long term care facility. You are responsible for supporting total resident care, according to a Resident Care Plan, ensuring residents' optimal functioning and well-being in a supportive, therapeutic environment, with an emphasis on resident safety and engagement.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate program which meets the standards established in the Fixing Long-Term Care Act.
  • Minimum of one hundred and forty (140) hours of clinical practicum within the Personal Support Worker program.
  • Combined class and practical experience must be 600 hours in duration.
  • Knowledge of resident hygiene, optimal functioning, well-being, feeding, and elimination.
  • Knowledge of Health Care Aide routines and practices in a long-term care setting.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control guidelines.
  • Knowledge of transfer and positioning techniques of residents.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation and palliative care approaches.
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.
  • Effective team member.
  • Respectful and caring to residents.
  • Ability to communicate with cognitively impaired residents and their families.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to follow resident care plan and carry out activities as directed.
  • Ability to report resident needs through observation of physical and mental condition/behaviour.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures to maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Ability to transfer and position persons requiring long-term care.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Meets the physical demands of the job.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Displays a positive attitude towards older persons.
  • Demonstrates respect for resident choice, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Reliable, punctual, flexible, adaptable, tactful.
  • Must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.

  • Preferably with clinic experience in a geriatric or long term care setting.

Benefits

  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
