This position works under minimal supervision with intermediate-level approval authority to review, accept, reject, or modify new and renewal business for moderately complex to complex Personal Lines policies, ensuring a profitable personal book of business. The role involves reviewing risk acceptability, making objective decisions based on underwriting guidelines, and ensuring compliance with state regulations. It requires using creativity and underwriting knowledge to manage risks and retain business, while referring the most complex cases to senior staff. A key aspect of the role is building and maintaining relationships with agents through inbound and outbound calls, travel to agent offices, educating them on underwriting philosophy, providing updates on products and procedures, and addressing compliance concerns. The underwriter will also review loss ratios and growth for agents, make agency exceptions, and work with agents to correct errors. This may involve changing deductibles, increasing premiums, canceling policies, or recommending additional training for agents. The role also includes reporting non-compliant or unethical agent behavior, partnering with Agency Performance Management and Territory Managers to identify trends, and collaborating with various business units on product, system, and performance recommendations. There may be opportunities to assist in training less experienced staff and participate in special projects.
