About The Position

This role is designed to build foundational underwriting expertise by supporting the assessment and evaluation of low complexity risks. The incumbent will learn and apply technical insurance knowledge, including product guidelines, rating tools, and policy terms, while developing sound decision-making skills. Through hands-on experience and training, they will gather and analyze customer information, prepare policy terms, and negotiate endorsements and renewals.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in the insurance industry
  • Post-secondary education, working towards CIP designation
  • Exemplary analytical skills and can make informed decisions.
  • Skilled communicator who can adapt their approach to their audience.
  • Can influence decisions and negotiate strategically.
  • Enthusiastic learner who thrives within a team or independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven decision-making and analytical skills, including the ability to determine how to grow business profitability through assessment and analysis of individual risks.

Responsibilities

  • Learn the technical aspects of insurance: assessing and evaluating risk to make empowered decisions;
  • Understands and can apply basic knowledge of own product area (guidelines and rules, philosophies, services, ratings and available tools);
  • Recognizes limitations in knowledge of risks and seeks assistance as required;
  • Understands and can explain the basic terms, conditions and exclusions for the policy coverage provided in own specific areas of expertise;
  • Seeks full understanding of risks, and where facts may be missing, uses additional underwriting tools, apps, reports, inspections to gain increased knowledge of risk
  • Participate in, or provide training and development initiatives to constantly enhance the quality of decision making;
  • Underwrite and negotiate low complexity renewals and policy endorsements.
  • Gathering background information on potential customers from information provided in proposal forms for insurance;
  • Analyzing all relevant data using appropriate software to determine whether the level of risk is acceptable;
  • Preparing the terms and conditions of insurance policies.
