About The Position

Personal Care Aides are unlicensed, non-professional workers who provide care to individual clients in their homes within the community, helping them maintain their independence. While an active Home Health Aide (HBA) or Personal Care Aide (PCA) certificate in NYS is required, Presbyterian Home Care provides training for those not yet certified. The PCA is a member of the service team, working under the guidance of a supervisor and is expected to continuously develop their skills.

Requirements

• Must successfully complete an approved training course to carry out assigned activities.
• Be 18 years of age.
• Show maturity, emotional and mental stability.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
• Shall be able to speak, read and write English.
• Speak the predominant language of the resident.
• Understand and carry out directions and instructions.
• Record messages and keep simple records.
• Have good physical health, as indicated by documentation in the Human Resources Files.
• Must participate in 12 or more hours of in-service education per year.

Nice To Haves

• Active Home Health Aide (HHA) or Personal Care Aide (PCA) certificate in NYS.

Responsibilities

• Give personal care including bath, shampoo, denture care, making beds, assisting with dressing and walking, transferring patients, nail care, and feeding.
• Give special care such as accompanying patients to medical appointments and assisting with the use of appliances like wheelchairs and walkers.
• Assist ONLY with medications.
• Perform light housekeeping duties to maintain a healthy and safe environment, including dusting, vacuuming, laundry, washing dishes, shopping, and meal preparation.
• Assist with payment of bills.
• Promote the patient’s mental alertness through conversation, reading, games, and other activities.
• Report any changes in the patient’s mental or physical condition to the supervisor.
