About The Position
The Person In Charge (PIC) is a primary contact for Safeway customers and provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. When the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers are absent, the PIC is in charge of the store and has analogous authority to make decisions needed to operate it efficiently, profitably, and with superior customer service. When in charge, generally at night, the PIC supervises store employees. The role also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may work in multiple store departments. The role includes serving customers, handling payments and grocery bagging, assisting cashiers with register and scanner issues, performing basic office tasks, and helping maintain a clean and safe store. The PIC may also perform closing, inventory, and till-counting duties. The job involves working entirely inside the store, standing constantly, frequent walking, and regular handling and movement of merchandise and equipment.
Requirements
- Ability to follow company customer-service procedures.
- Demonstrated prior customer-service skills or related experience.
- Ability to interact with customers and coworkers.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Knowledge of all positions within the store.
- Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities
- Provide customer service according to employer procedures and company policy.
- Handle emergencies, customer complaints, and employee or customer accidents, and supervise store personnel.
- Maintain familiarity with company policies and procedures.
- Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and product replenishment.
- Replace stock in displays near the checkout area.
- Help maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assist cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
- Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
- Operate an electronically scanning cash register to total customer purchases.
- Receive customer payments and count back correct change.
- Bag groceries and lift bags into carts; offer carry-out assistance and perform it when a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable.
- May complete the end-of-day office function.
- May count out-of-stock product.
- May count tills when other cashier-checkers leave.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
