The Person In Charge (PIC) is a primary point of contact for Safeway customers and provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. When the Store Manager and First and Second Assistant Managers are absent, the PIC is responsible for operating the store, making necessary decisions to support profitability, efficiency, and customer service, and supervising store employees. This is generally when the PIC is in charge at night. The PIC also performs Cashier-Checker duties and may be required to work in various store departments. The position involves customer service, handling emergencies and complaints, overseeing store personnel and sales-floor service, maintaining product replenishment and a clean and safe environment, assisting cashiers with equipment issues, performing basic office functions, and operating a register to process purchases and payments. Additional duties may include closing functions, counting out-of-stock products or tills, and carrying groceries out when a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable. The role is performed almost entirely indoors. It requires frequent standing and walking, handling and grasping products, operating checkout equipment, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling items at the stated weights and frequencies. The PIC may occasionally use a step stool to reach high shelves. Permits or licenses vary by store location and state or county requirements.
