About The Position

Under the direction of the Chief Building Official, this position serves as the first point of contact for walk-in and phone customers of the Building Department. The Permit Technician answers general questions about the processes and services provided by the department, including permit applications for commercial, residential, miscellaneous signs, temporary use, and projects within the City of Reynoldsburg. This role involves reviewing applications for completeness, recording receipts, and forwarding them to the appropriate division for review. The technician also provides fee information, processes fee collections, and reviews construction plans to ensure compliance with city ordinances. They coordinate the permit process with outside agencies, serve as a file manager for trade licenses, insurance, and bonds, and maintain files for certificates of occupancy, vendor information, and health inspections. Additionally, the position performs records research, prepares records retention schedules, inputs data for reports, and handles various administrative tasks such as mail sorting and answering telephones. Staying informed about relevant developments and procedures, participating in staff development, and adhering to job safety requirements are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years experience or training in administrative work preferably in a building department or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform office practices and procedures; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge of office practices & procedures.
  • Knowledge of human relations.
  • Knowledge of City zoning & planning ordinances.
  • Knowledge of English & grammar.
  • Skill in general computer operation (Microsoft office).
  • Skill in operating office equipment (personal computer, fax, copier, scanner).
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant, courteous, professional demeanor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with the general public, other personnel and city officials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by telephone, email and in person.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as file manager for electrical plumbing irrigators and mechanical trade licenses, insurance and bonds.
  • Maintains files for all permit certificates of occupancy, vendor, health inspections and other documents issued or approved the building department.
  • Performs records research to document project history compliance.
  • Prepares records retention & disposal schedules.
  • Inputs data into city computer software for monthly/yearly report preparation for review.
  • Receives, opens, sorts & distributes mail to appropriate people.
  • Answers telephone & screens calls.
  • Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties.
  • Participates in staff development activities and attends staff meetings.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
