About The Position

Upper Darby Township is seeking a Permit Technician to join the Licenses & Inspections Department. This role is fast-paced and customer-focused, playing a key part in assisting the public with licensing, permitting, and inspection requirements while ensuring compliance with Township codes. The position involves processing applications, coordinating inspections, maintaining records, and providing administrative support for various Township programs. The Permit Technician will communicate with a diverse range of individuals, including residents, landlords, contractors, and business owners, regarding application processes, inspection scheduling, and compliance matters. Additionally, the role supports code enforcement by tracking violations, preparing notices, collecting payments, and assisting inspectors and leadership with administrative tasks. This is an excellent opportunity for an organized individual with strong customer service skills who enjoys administrative coordination and public interaction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least two (2) years of experience in permitting, municipal administration, property management, customer service, or a related field
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
  • Successfully complete all required background checks and pre-employment screenings
  • Obtain either an ICC Permit Technician Certification or ICC Code Enforcement Technician Certification within five (5) months of hire if not already certified

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with construction, housing, permitting, or rental licensing terminology
  • Strong administrative, communication, and recordkeeping skills
  • Experience working with permitting, licensing, or records management software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and changing priorities

Responsibilities

  • Processing permit and license applications
  • Coordinating inspections and re-inspections
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Providing day-to-day support for the Township's Rental Licensing and Use & Occupancy Inspection Programs
  • Communicating with landlords, property owners, contractors, realtors, and residents regarding application requirements, inspection scheduling, compliance issues, and licensing deadlines
  • Tracking violations
  • Preparing notices and correspondence
  • Collecting payments
  • Maintaining departmental records
  • Assisting inspectors and department leadership with administrative functions
