About The Position

This position is responsible for collecting and verifying all documentation for the issuing of building permits for both residential and commercial development. The Permit Technician serves the public by receiving documentation for permit requests, verifying property information, researching zoning ordinances and Land Management Regulations, and explaining them to the public. This role also involves understanding contractor regulations and determining the permissibility of work for named contractors. Additionally, the position is responsible for issuing various permits including power permits, safety electrical permits, and Certificates of Occupancy, which includes scanning and maintaining files, and contacting power companies. The incumbent will also handle customer service inquiries regarding planning and development, and make decisions based on building codes, Land Management Regulations, FEMA flood maps, and contractor regulations, escalating complex issues to management. A major challenge is staying current with changing codes and regulations and effectively communicating them to the public.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Knowledge of Land Management Regulations
  • Knowledge of building codes
  • Ability to read FEMA flood maps
  • 1 year of job-related experience
  • ICC certification for Permit Technicians

Responsibilities

  • Collecting and verifying all documentation for the issuing of building permits for both residential and commercial development.
  • Serving the public by receiving documentation for permit requests.
  • Verifying property information, including parcel numbers, taxes paid, and addresses.
  • Researching zoning ordinances and Land Management Regulations and explaining them to the public.
  • Understanding contractor regulations and determining the permissibility of work for named contractors.
  • Issuing power permits, safety electrical permits, and Certificates of Occupancy in accordance with building codes.
  • Scanning and maintaining files for the department.
  • Contacting various power companies in the area for power permits.
  • Addressing questions or concerns from the public regarding planning and development.
  • Receiving the public at the reception window for the department.
  • Making decisions based upon the building codes, Land Management Regulations, FEMA flood maps, and the regulations for Contractors.
  • Staying current with ever-changing codes and regulations.
  • Explaining regulations to the public.
