About The Position

The City & Borough of Juneau, Community Development Department is seeking a dynamic individual to join the team! Our ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused office environment and is comfortable managing frequent interruptions while delivering accuracy and professionalism. They are self-motivated, organized, and able to prioritize and transition efficiently between multiple tasks. This position also requires strong attention to detail, accurate data entry skills, and the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations to determine permit fees and calculate square footage. Excellent customer service and communication skills are essential, as the position regularly assists both internal and external customers. The workload typically increases during the spring and summer construction season, requiring the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities. Because work is performed in a shared office environment, the successful candidate must be able to concentrate and remain productive despite background activity and conversation. The position also requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the workday while performing assigned duties and assisting customers. Community Development is a dynamic department composed of Permitting, Planning, Building, and Administrative sections that are collectively responsible for administering the land use ordinances and building code regulations for the City and Borough of Juneau. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
  • One (1) year of clerical and/or customer service experience.
  • One (1) year of experience in the construction field performing semi-skilled work in plumping, electrical, or carpentry AND a minimum of six (6) months experience processing building, engineering, or other property/development permits (for Permit Technician II).
  • One (1) year of experience processing building, fire, engineering, or other development permits at the technical level equivalent to a Permit Technician II with the City and Borough of Juneau (for Permit Technician III).
  • Certification as a Permit Technician by the International Conference of Building Officials or the equivalent through another agency (for Permit Technician III).

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education may be substituted for the required clerical experience on the basis of 2.67 semester hours (4 quarter hours) for one month of experience (for Permit Technician I and II).
  • Post-secondary education may be substituted for the required clerical experience on the basis of 2.67 semester hours (4 quarter hours) for one month of experience up to a maximum of one year (for Permit Technician II).
  • There is no substitution for the permit processing experience (for Permit Technician II).

Responsibilities

  • Responds to public inquiries regarding development codes, permitting requirements, and application processes.
  • Reviews permit applications for completeness and advises applicants on required documentation and available resources.
  • Provides technical support for the online permitting system, including login assistance, application submissions, document uploads, and permit selection.
  • Enters, updates, and maintains permit records for building, utility, zoning, and other development applications.
  • Calculates, collects, and processes permit fees; prepares financial reports and maintains related records.
  • Answers Community Development phone lines, provides general information, and directs inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Researches property records, interprets maps and as-built drawings, and fulfills public records requests.
  • Prepares Temporary/Certificates of Occupancy for issuance.
