About The Position

The Perioperative Care Assistant provides routine support that contributes to safe and effective patient care in the Surgical Services Department. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the assistant transports patients, manages equipment, and helps the surgical team maintain a clean and organized environment. The position is onsite at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, New York, with full-time 10- or 12-hour shifts, days/evenings Monday through Friday. Weeknight, weekend, and holiday on-call duties are mandatory. No travel is expected. The stated pay range is $17.34–$24.41 per hour, plus benefits.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent experience.
Ability to lift over 25 pounds and assist with patient positioning and transfers up to 50 pounds.
Ability to maintain a clean, safe environment.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling of equipment and patients.
Work involves exposure to a hospital environment, including sterile surgical areas.

Nice To Haves

At least one year of experience in a healthcare setting.
Additional healthcare experience in perioperative or surgical services.
Familiarity with operating room protocols and aseptic techniques.

Responsibilities

Assist with patient transport and specimen delivery, ensuring timely and safe handling.
Support surgical teams with patient positioning, movement, and preparation.
Assist with operating room turnover and termination procedures, including trash and linen removal, to maintain cleanliness.
Retrieve, set up, clean, and properly store equipment.
Ensure essential surgical supplies and personal protective equipment are available in designated areas.
Fulfill required weekday and weekend on-call responsibilities; the posting also specifies mandatory weeknight, weekend, and holiday on-call duties.
