The Perioperative 101 Program is a nine-month, full-time, benefited training program for nurses at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center’s Main Campus Operating Room. It combines AORN-approved online didactic learning with clinical skills labs and Operating Room experiences. The program is concentrated mainly on the circulating role. Participants begin with selected Perioperative Orientation offerings integrated with perioperative nursing content. After successfully completing the didactic portion, each nurse is paired with a mentor in the circulating role for a designated period, then rotates through the surgical specialties offered at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center before choosing a service in which to specialize. The Main OR has 26 operating room suites and provides care for adult and pediatric patients across thoracic, general, gynecologic, urology, plastics, ENT, eye, orthopedic, cardiac, vascular, neuro, and transplant services, including trauma. The typical schedule is four 10-hour shifts and includes holiday call; the first nine weeks may consist of eight-hour days. The program starts March 15, 2027, for new graduate nurses and March 29, 2027, for experienced nurses. Participants pay no program fee and receive full salary and benefits during training. In return, each participant commits to working full-time in the DHMC Operating Room for two years after successfully completing the program. A retention bonus is offered for this two-year commitment, paid in installments.
