People Ops Manager

EvvyNew York, NY
Hybrid

About The Position

We’re looking for a People Ops Manager to build and run the people function as Evvy scales. Reporting to the Head of Finance, you’ll own the full surface area as our first in-house people hire: employee lifecycle, benefits, compliance, performance management, office management, and culture. You’ll set the tone for what working at Evvy feels like. This is a role for someone who is equal parts operator and culture-builder: rigorous about systems and compliance, warm about the human side, and energized by an in-person team. This role is NYC-based and in-office 4 days a week (Wednesdays remote); you’ll be the heartbeat of our NYC office and the day-to-day partner to managers and teammates across the company. Evvy is a primarily in-person team based in New York, NY. Given the cross-functional nature of this role, our ideal candidate is located in NYC.

Requirements

  • 5–7 yrs of People Operations or HR experience, with 2–3+ years in a startup or high-growth environment.
  • Based in NYC and able to be in our office 4 days a week (Wednesdays remote). This is a hard requirement.
  • Hands-on experience across the full people stack: benefits, compliance, performance management, employee relations, and lifecycle operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of NY and federal employment law (EEO, ADA, FMLA, NYC sick leave, pay transparency); comfortable owning the employee handbook.
  • Experience with HRIS/PEO platforms (Justworks, Rippling, Gusto, or similar) and a track record of keeping people data clean.
  • Office management or workplace experience chops: you’ve run an office before and know what makes one feel like a great place to be.
  • A culture builder: thoughtful about the small rituals that bring teams together; experienced running social events, offsites, and team gatherings.
  • Excellent judgment in confidential or sensitive situations; you keep things calm, fair, and legally defensible.
  • Self-starter with a builder’s mindset: sees the gap, designs the solution, executes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as the first People hire at a growing company.
  • Healthcare or life sciences exposure (HIPAA, clinical hires, regulated environments).
  • Background planning multi-day offsites or large team events end-to-end.
  • Familiarity with NY-specific compliance (NYS Paid Family Leave, NYC Earned Safe and Sick Time Act).

Responsibilities

  • Support team leaders in designing & executing recruiting processes
  • Own onboarding and offboarding end-to-end: paperwork, equipment, system access, day-one experience, and exit interviews.
  • Run bi-annual performance management cycles: self-assessments, manager assessments, peer feedback, and 1:1 cadences.
  • Manage leaves of absence (parental, medical, sick) and accommodations with sound judgment and legal rigor.
  • Own annual benefits renewal: review options, negotiate with brokers, communicate changes, and run open enrollment.
  • Own compliance, trainings, and tracking for employees (eventually including HIPAA)
  • Run our NYC office day-to-day: vendor management (cleaning, IT, food), supplies, mail, and maintenance.
  • Plan and execute social events and offsites that reflect Evvy’s culture: team dinners, happy hours, themed gatherings.
  • Own the people tech stack; identify gaps and bring in tools that scale with us.
  • Build manager guides and decision trees for common scenarios (performance issues, leaves, terminations, accommodations).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee questions; resolve most independently and escalate the rest with sound judgment.
  • Partner with leadership and managers to shape culture moments that scale as we grow.
  • Document policies, processes, and playbooks so people ops scales beyond any one person.

Benefits

  • Flexible PTO
  • $1K learning and development budget
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, plus HSA plans
  • 401(k) plan (Roth and traditional)
  • Monthly team events
  • Free Evvy membership
  • Paid parental leave
